{"id":4731,"date":"2026-01-06T16:01:37","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T15:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/martinique2050.com\/on-baisse-la-lumiere-pour-les-tortues-marines\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T16:01:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T15:01:37","slug":"on-baisse-la-lumiere-pour-les-tortues-marines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinique2050.com\/en\/on-baisse-la-lumiere-pour-les-tortues-marines\/","title":{"rendered":"Let's dim the lights for the sea turtles!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Reducing light pollution at sea turtle nesting sites in Martinique\u2014that is the goal of the agreement signed by the DEAL, EDF, and SMEM in collaboration with the ONF!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In fact, artificial lighting near nesting sites puts the turtles at risk, because they come ashore to lay their eggs and rely on the reflections of the moon and stars on the sea to find their way. They are therefore disoriented by human lighting, which leads to an unacceptably high mortality rate due to exhaustion, being run over by vehicles, or predation. The same is true for hatchlings that have just emerged from their eggs! As a result, nesting sites are gradually being abandoned by the turtles\u2014if they haven\u2019t already been paved over!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-detail wp-image-4942\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20150%20150'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Every year, several dozen cases of disoriented turtles are reported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tortuesmarinesmartinique.org\/\"><strong>Sea Turtle Network<\/strong><\/a> which carries out rescue operations; however, several hundred turtles\u2014mostly hatchlings\u2014do not return to the sea.<\/p>\n<p><strong> The ONF conducted an assessment that highlights \u201cthe presence of numerous light sources that are hazardous to turtles at several of the island\u2019s most important nesting sites.\u201d<\/strong>. However, there are technical solutions that are simple to implement to \u201creduce the negative impacts of coastal lighting on biodiversity,\u201d and the ONF has been able to secure funding to take action in this regard. These funds will help limit light pollution through the rapid implementation of technical solutions, such as replacing current streetlights with energy-efficient LEDs. To this end, a Program for Efficient Public Lighting (PEPP) is being implemented by the partners. It is expected to result in a reduction in energy consumption for public lighting from 50% to 70% and<\/p>\n<p>resulting in savings of more than 2 million euros on Martinique\u2019s energy bill. More than 66,000 light fixtures are included in this program<\/p>\n<p>The three species of sea turtles that nest along the coast of Martinique are the focus of a national action plan led by the DEAL and coordinated by the ONF.
