The hurricane season is particularly active in the Atlantic Ocean. After Hurricane Harvey struck Texas, an even more powerful hurricane hit the West Indies, the Caribbean, and Florida. Irma became a Category 5 hurricane of unprecedented strength in the North Atlantic Ocean.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Irma formed about 500 km west of the Cape Verde Islands on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. Fueled by increasingly warm tropical waters, the tropical storm gained strength and, within a few days, became a hurricane of Category 5<\/a> (the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson open scale, which classifies hurricanes).<\/p>\n
