These changes result from mechanisms intrinsic to the Earth, external influences, and human impacts.<\/h3>\n<h3>Since its inception, the Earth has undergone numerous climate cycles: ice ages have alternated with much warmer periods, known as wet periods at low latitudes. While these dynamics have entirely natural causes, human activity\u2014particularly industrial activity\u2014appears to be responsible for contemporary global warming. This is primarily the result of greenhouse gas emissions (CO<sub>2<\/sub>, methane, fluorinated gases, etc.) into the atmosphere.<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>The Main Causes of Climate Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>De fa\u00e7on g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, le changement climatique d\u00e9signe l&rsquo;ensemble des modifications des caract\u00e9ristiques climatiques \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9 et en un lieu donn\u00e9, que cela se traduise par un r\u00e9chauffement ou un refroidissement global de la plan\u00e8te.<\/p>\n<p>Natural factors external to the climate system\u2014such as increased volcanic activity, changes in the Earth\u2019s axial tilt, an increase in the Earth\u2019s orbital ellipse around the Sun, and polar flattening (polar precession)\u2026have been identified as potential factors that cyclically alter (over tens of thousands of years) the established climate.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change can also result from human activity; this is the case, for example, with the excessive consumption of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, oil), as well as firewood, which release large volumes of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) which, by accumulating in the lower layers of the atmosphere (the troposphere) like a blanket, trap the infrared radiation emitted daily by the Earth and thus keep the Earth\u2019s temperature higher than usual. Deforestation also contributes to this phenomenon, since trees no longer absorb CO<sub>2<\/sub>, which contributes to the greenhouse effect (the abnormal accumulation of heat in the lower layers of the atmosphere). Between 1860 (the start of the First Industrial Revolution) and 2010, the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere rose from 280 ppm (parts per million) to just over 400 ppm, thereby significantly intensifying the greenhouse effect.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7193\" src=\"https:\/\/martinique2050.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1J1A_AdobeStock_458944212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"927\" height=\"618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinique2050.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1J1A_AdobeStock_458944212.jpg 927w, https:\/\/martinique2050.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1J1A_AdobeStock_458944212-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinique2050.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1J1A_AdobeStock_458944212-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 927px) 100vw, 927px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Consequences of Climate Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Si dans son premier rapport, le GIEC (Groupement Intergouvernemental sur l&rsquo;Evolution du Climat) estimait probable \u00e0 55 % environ le r\u00f4le de l\u2019homme dans le r\u00e9chauffement climatique, dans son dernier rapport (2014), cette probabilit\u00e9 s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve d\u00e9sormais \u00e0 95 %.<\/p>\n<p>The best-known and most noticeable effects of climate change are: the melting of high-mountain glaciers and ice caps, rising average sea levels, coastal flooding, population displacement (now referred to as \u201cclimate refugees\u201d), desertification, ocean acidification, and the spread of certain diseases that were previously confined to specific regions.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it is estimated that if nothing is done to reverse the trend, by 2100 the global average temperature is expected to rise by +1.6 to +5.4 degrees Celsius. It is worth noting that between 1900 and 2000, the global average temperature rose by +0.85 degrees Celsius. Similarly, the average sea level has risen by more than 25 cm over the past 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs estiment aussi qu\u2019\u00e0 long terme, le changement climatique induira des perturbations au sein du cycle de l\u2019eau, des difficult\u00e9s agricoles, l\u2019apparition de processus de\u00a0 d\u00e9sertification, la disparition de certains espaces et\/ou habitats c\u00f4tiers, comme les deltas, les mangroves, les r\u00e9cifs coralliens, une recrudescence du paludisme, l&rsquo;extension des maladies infectieuses comme le chol\u00e9ra, et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement une acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration de la perte de biodiversit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>En d\u00e9finitive, ce qui change aujourd\u2019hui par rapport aux variations climatiques qui ont pu \u00eatre observ\u00e9es par le pass\u00e9, c&rsquo;est que la vitesse moyenne du r\u00e9chauffement des basses couches de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re est \u00e9lev\u00e9e et semble s\u2019accentuer, sans que rien ni personne ne puisse l\u2019arr\u00eater.<\/p>\n<p>Il importe donc d\u00e8s aujourd\u2019hui de mettre en \u0153uvre des mesures d&rsquo;adaptation et d&rsquo;att\u00e9nuation face \u00e0 ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne. La COP 21 (21<sup>th<\/sup> The Conference of the Parties, to be held in Paris at the end of the year, is expected to play this role\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><strong>There's a lot of talk about the greenhouse effect\u2014what is it? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>L\u2019effet de serre est un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne naturel qui maintient la vie sur terre. En effet, plusieurs gaz dits \u00ab\u00a0gaz \u00e0 effet de serre\u00a0\u00bb forment un couvercle autour du globe retenant ainsi la chaleur \u00e9mise par le soleil, absorb\u00e9e par la terre, puis renvoy\u00e9e par cette derni\u00e8re vers l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019effet de serre naturel conditionne donc nos climats et nos \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes. Un grand nombre de ces gaz sont naturellement pr\u00e9sents dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, mais l\u2019activit\u00e9 anthropique accro\u00eet d\u00e9sormais la concentration de certains d\u2019entre eux, ce qui sous-tend la formation d\u2019un effet de serre additionnel (g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 par l\u2019activit\u00e9 anthropique).<\/p>\n<p>Les gaz \u00e0 effet de serre sont divers\u00a0: dioxyde de carbone, m\u00e9thane, chlorofluorocarbures, ozone, etc. Le dioxyde de carbone est le gaz \u00e0 effet de serre le plus produit par les activit\u00e9s humaines, on estime que sa concentration dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re a augment\u00e9 de 31 % depuis 1750.<\/p>\n<p>These emissions are primarily caused by the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas. Deforestation and the expansion of livestock farming are also significant sources of emissions, as trees normally help regulate the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re.
