Incidents of sand haze are becoming more frequent, and residents are often misinformed or at a loss as to how to respond. French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Martinique are joining forces to find solutions to this shared problem, to raise public awareness, and, of course, to protect the most vulnerable.<\/h2>\n

How do sandstorms work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It is no longer uncommon for sand clouds from the Sahara to reach the Caribbean region. But the problem is not just the sand itself, but all the fine particles carried in this thick haze, which cause numerous inconveniences and various forms of pollution. Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guiana are all facing the same issue. \u00abSand hazes contain fine particles and increase their concentration in the air,\u00bb explains Madininair.<\/p>\n

That is why three organizations are responsible for calculating air quality on a daily basis, in real time: Atmo Guyane, Gwad\u2019Air, and Madininair. Once they reach the territories, fine particles are inhaled through the nose and enter the lungs. The consequences can be serious, which is why it is recommended to take precautions.<\/p>\n

How should we respond to these episodes of pollution?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When a pollution incident occurs, the authorities classify the event based on the level of danger it poses to the public, using a two-tier system: \u00abinformation and recommendations\u00bb (orange) and \u00abalert\u00bb (red).<\/p>\n

When the orange level is reached, children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people who are ill should take precautions. At the red \u00abalert\u00bb level, the entire population is affected, and it is recommended that people avoid driving, refrain from physical activity, and consult a doctor if necessary.<\/p>\n
