In Martinique, fruits and vegetables that are still safe to eat are sometimes left on farms due to a lack of labor, a lack of markets, or because they do not meet commercial standards. At the same time, part of the population struggles to access fresh produce on a regular basis. The organization Le R\u00e9veil Agricole bridges this gap by collecting unsold produce and redistributing it to food assistance programs. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

According to the magazine *ADEME Outre-mer*, published in March 2026, more than 80 % of farms in Martinique reportedly experience between 5 and 30 % in losses and unsold produce. Since November 2023, the program has reportedly saved 110 metric tons of produce. However, ADEME does not specify the methodology used to arrive at these estimates.<\/em><\/h4>\n

Crops with insufficient markets<\/h2>\n

The products in question are not necessarily unfit for consumption. Some are set aside because they do not meet the standards expected by retail channels. Others have reached an advanced stage of ripeness or are available in quantities that exceed immediate sales capacity.<\/p>\n

In addition to these challenges, there are labor shortages and, at times, insufficient access to distribution networks.<\/strong> For perishable fruits and vegetables, the time between harvest and sale is short. When no buyer or means of transportation is readily available, produce that is otherwise fit for consumption may lose its commercial value and remain in the field.<\/p>\n

Food waste, therefore, doesn\u2019t just happen in kitchens or stores. It can occur as early as the production stage\u2014during harvesting, packaging, transportation, and finding a market. Producing locally isn\u2019t enough: But there still need to be distribution channels capable of absorbing the harvests at the right time.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

A supply chain connecting farmers and community-supported grocery stores<\/h2>\n

The Agricultural Awakening<\/strong> steps in at this very point in the supply chain. The organization collects unsold fruits and vegetables from farmers and then offers them for sale on Proxidon<\/strong>, an app developed by the Food Bank.<\/p>\n

Social and community grocery stores can view the available products and reserve them. The organization then arranges for the products to be delivered to the relevant organizations. This process helps shorten the time between identifying surplus food and its redistribution, which is essential for preserving food items that may have a limited shelf life.<\/p>\n

The system is based on a partnership with the Martinique Food Bank.<\/strong> It also receives support from ADEME, the Family Allowance Fund, Cap Nord, CACEM, CAESM, the Directorate of Economy, Employment, Labor, and Solidarity, and the Directorate of Food, Agriculture, and Forestry.<\/p>\n

This organization does not create new products. It finds a new purpose for products that already exist but were at risk of being removed from the food supply chain. In this way, it meets two needs: to reduce losses incurred by farms and make it easier for low-income households to access local fruits and vegetables.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

110 metric tons recovered since November 2023<\/h2>\n

According to ADEME, the \u201cR\u00e9veil Agricole\u201d initiative has helped prevent the waste of 110 metric tons of agricultural products since November 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This volume provides an initial indication of the program\u2019s effectiveness. It represents the amount of food that was not discarded on farms and was instead channeled into a food-sharing network.<\/p>\n

However, the publication does not specify the number of farmers involved, the municipalities covered, the number of participating grocery stores, or the number of people who received these products. Nor does it provide details on the composition of the 110 metric tons or how they were distributed over time.<\/p>\n

The reported results show the scale the initiative has already reached, but do not yet allow us to fully assess all of its social and economic impacts.<\/p>\n

The project also reveals the importance of logistics.<\/strong> Between the farm and the community grocery store, we need to identify the available products, organize their collection, list them on the platform, record reservations, and arrange for their transport.<\/p>\n

Without this coordination, even a harvest that is available for free may remain inaccessible to those who need it.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

Six young people trained on the farms<\/h2>\n

The system also includes a section devoted to job placement.<\/strong> Six young people are to be trained as part of job-training programs conducted at farmers' operations.<\/p>\n

The goal is to teach them agricultural skills and provide them with initial work experience that can help them enter the job market. This initiative indirectly addresses one of the challenges mentioned by farmers: the shortage of available labor to work on farms.<\/em><\/p>\n

The source does not specify the duration of the programs, the trades taught, or the participants\u2019 employment status upon completion of their training. The project, however, links food recovery to a broader goal: preserving and passing on skills that are useful to local agriculture.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

Better Aligning Production with Food Needs<\/h2>\n

Le R\u00e9veil Agricole provides a concrete response to losses<\/strong> that would otherwise have little chance of being put to good use. But its efforts also highlight a more structural weakness: the lack of coordination between available crops, logistical resources, and the region\u2019s food needs.<\/p>\n

The recovery of unsold produce occurs when a surplus already exists. In the longer term, reducing waste will also require better forecasting of market demand, a more responsive approach to harvesting and transportation, and the strengthening of local marketing and redistribution networks.<\/p>\n

By bringing produce that might otherwise have been left in the fields to community food pantries, the project demonstrates that a harvest considered unsellable can still retain its full nutritional value\u2014provided there is a system in place to collect it and quickly put it back into circulation.<\/p>\n
