As Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley has established herself as one of the world\u2019s most influential voices on climate change and development financing. From the COP podium to the Bridgetown Initiative, she champions the cause of the Caribbean\u2019s small island states and is leading her island toward 100% renewable energy by 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Voice for Small Island States<\/h3>\n

At COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, Mia Mottley made a lasting impression. Speaking before world leaders, she warned that a 2\u00b0C rise in temperature would be \u00aba death sentence\u00bb for the people of small island nations, from Barbados to the Maldives. The first woman to lead Barbados, having been in office since 2018, she has become the voice of the countries on the front lines of climate change.<\/p>\n

The Bridgetown Initiative: Reforming the Global Financial System<\/h3>\n

Unveiled at COP27 (2022) and further developed in 2023 and 2024, the Bridgetown Initiative\u2014named after the capital of Barbados\u2014proposes a fundamental reform of the international financial architecture.<\/p>\n

She points out a glaring inequality: rich countries borrow at rates of 1 to 4 %, while vulnerable countries pay around 14 %. In particular, the plan advocates for \u00abclimate-resilient debt clauses,\u00bb which suspend repayment when a country is struck by a disaster, such as a hurricane.<\/p>\n

Barbados: A Testing Ground for Transition<\/h3>\n

Within her country, Mia Mottley is leading Barbados toward an ambitious goal: 100 % of renewable energy and carbon neutrality by 2030. Solar and wind power, along with reducing dependence on fossil fuels, are at the heart of an energy transition plan supported by international partners.<\/p>\n

International Recognition<\/h3>\n

Her commitment has earned her worldwide recognition. Honored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), she received the TIME Earth Award in 2025 for her work on climate action. For the Caribbean, her fight exemplifies a conviction: small islands\u2014which are among the most vulnerable\u2014can also be at the forefront of solutions.<\/p>\n

A challenge shared with Martinique<\/h3>\n

Faced with the same challenges (rising sea levels, hurricanes, Sargassum, and heavy dependence on energy imports), Martinique largely shares the agenda championed by Mia Mottley.
