ADEME has just released a great 16-page magazine about its initiatives and what’s happening in the Overseas Territories in terms of sustainable development. Featuring articles, interviews with key players, and an overview of initiatives in these overseas territories, the magazine is available on the ADEME Martinique website or HERE.
To kick off this issue of the magazine, here is a message from the President of ADEME:

ADEME has a presence in the overseas territories through its regional offices in Réunion (which oversees Mayotte), Guadeloupe (which also covers Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy), Martinique, and French Guiana, as well as through territorial offices serving the overseas collectivities of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, French Polynesia, and New Caledonia.
Given the significant challenges these regions face in terms of climate change and their specific circumstances (energy self-sufficiency by 2030, the transition in waste management—balancing the need to catch up on infrastructure with the necessary shift toward a circular economy…), ADEME has successfully adapted its support mechanisms (extending support programs originally established in mainland France, implementing a dedicated assistance system).
The action plans developed in these regions are based on strong, lasting partnerships with local and regional governments (regions, unified local authorities, the national government, provinces, and countries), which provide financial resources alongside those of ADEME through active collaborations based on the CPERs or development contracts.
In accordance with the strategic guidelines of ADEME’s Executive Directorate for Territorial Action, many projects also involve teams from other overseas territories and central offices.
In particular:
- Various projects have been carried out across regions since June 2011 (communication, training, case management, Sargassum, electric vehicles, etc.);
- Programs are designed and developed in collaboration with the technical departments (landfill litigation, used oil, end-of-life vehicles, etc.);
- regional cooperation initiatives involving third countries on ecological and energy transition (the Interreg IV program on geothermal energy in the Caribbean, sustainable building in hot climates in the Indian Ocean and Africa, «energy» conferences in Mauritius, etc.).
