In 2015, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed an international day of awareness for the conservation of mangrove ecosystems—“unique, distinctive, and fragile ecosystems that, by their very existence, provide humans with substantial benefits in terms of biomass and productivity, as well as goods and services derived from forestry and fisheries, contributes to coastal protection, and plays a particularly important role in mitigating the effects of climate change and ensuring food security for local communities.”
On July 26, 2019, as part of International Mangrove Day, the Water Authority (ODE) is organizing an awareness and information event focused on the Génipa mangrove, the largest in Martinique.
The objectives of this event are to foster cohesion among potential members of Res’EAU, ODE Martinique, including Ass’EAU, the eco-ambassadors from the EPCIs, businesses in sensitive sectors, municipal recreation centers, and teachers in the National Education System. The goal is to expand Res’EAU members’ knowledge of the mangrove ecosystem, raise their awareness of the threats facing this environment, and enjoy a friendly get-together over a zero-waste picnic!
