The municipality of Sainte-Luce, in collaboration with the AMG (Marine Protected Area), organized a lionfish capture and recycling operation on December 17. After just two hours of harvesting, 10 divers resurfaced with no fewer than 35 kilograms of lionfish. This fish is highly detrimental to the biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems. The lionfish has no natural predators; it eats everything in its path and leaves the area barren in its wake. The female lays more than 30,000 eggs every four days.
However, when prepared in various ways, this fish is delicious and deserves to be better known. Marketing its meat could significantly reduce its population in Martinique’s waters and could be a solution for maintaining the health of the coral reefs.
