Natural Heritage Days, too!
The annual celebration of our local heritage treasures will take place next weekend, September 21 and 22, throughout the region, with more than a hundred events!
It offers an opportunity to discover aspects of the island’s history and traditions, as well as its architectural and cultural heritage—both private and public—since some sites are open only for this event and certain collections are on display only at this time. This event, which has now expanded to a European scale, has ”Arts and Entertainment” as its theme this year, with a strong focus on intangible heritage and heritage practices.
But it’s also an opportunity to explore Martinique’s natural heritage, with certain sites dedicated to the island’s biodiversity, as well as the unveiling of never-before-seen collections and fascinating lectures…
We noticed:
-The exhibition “Sands from Here and Elsewhere” at the Maison des Volcans in Morne Rouge is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
-The exhibition “Martinique’s Nocturnal Animals” at the Musée du Père Pinchon, on Route de Didier in Fort-de-France, Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
-The exhibition “By the Sweat of Man’s Brow: Sugarcane Cultivation, from the Hoe to Mechanization” will be open both days starting at 9 a.m.
-The lecture “The Rivers of Martinique,” by Guillaume Lalubie, also at the Père Pinchon Museum, on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed the next day, Sunday, by the lecture “River Bathing, sea bathing, and ”bains démarrés’” by Marie Chomereau Lamotte from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
-Various afternoon workshops, including ones at the Musée du Père Pinchon focusing on coconut leaf weaving and floral decoration, and at the Habitation Sucrerie des Anses d’Arlet, which will focus on weaving wood and sugarcane leaves, will be held on both days.
-A guided walking tour through Saint-Pierre, focusing on water and fountains; meet on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in front of the Saint-Pierre pier.
-A tour of the organic sugarcane fields at the Neisson Distillery in Le Carbet.
But there’s still so much more to see… The 36th edition of Heritage Days is a great opportunity to discover the treasures of Martinique—especially since it’s completely free and open to everyone!
