Economy and Environment: The Maritime Cluster Launches a Survey to Gain a Better Understanding of the Boating Industry

«Focus on blue growth.» That’s the motto of the Maritime Cluster, an organization dedicated to bringing together the economy and the environment in the maritime sector—because while the ocean is an environmental issue, it is also an industry with its own economic challenges.

Learning More About the Maritime Industry in Martinique

Data on Martinique’s nautical sector dates back more than 10 years, which is why the Martinique Maritime Cluster is launching a major consultation to gather information on the sector. «The Maritime Cluster was awarded a grant from the Maritime Intervention Fund (FIM) in 2024 to conduct an economic study on Martinique’s nautical sector,» state the leaders of the Maritime Cluster in the study’s preface.

The questions focus on sectors of activity, the specific activities carried out by marine-related businesses, and the geographic distribution of marine-related activities in Martinique.

This is a quantitative study intended primarily for businesses in the «water sports industry, services related to the water sports sector, or services related to water sports events.» Ports and harbor master’s offices are also covered by this study.

Blue Economy

The survey launched by the Maritime Cluster aims to gain a better understanding of the link between the sea and financial and economic issues. Specifically, the questions focus on employment—including the number of women, hiring trends, and the age of workers—as well as financial data such as companies’ revenue, their financing capacity, and their use of public subsidies. Finally, the survey seeks to understand how maritime stakeholders manage to balance economic and environmental concerns, particularly by examining projects currently under development.

This study is supported by the Prefecture of Martinique and the Directorate of the Sea, and is part of the France Nation Verte initiative.
