From north to south, the Martinique Waste Treatment and Recycling Union provides the public with a network of thirteen local collection sites. This network is essential for directing waste to the appropriate channels, promoting its recycling, and combating illegal dumping.
Used furniture, household appliances, yard waste, construction debris, cardboard, metal, used motor oil, batteries, and electrical equipment must not be left on public streets or routinely disposed of with household trash. To enable the people of Martinique to dispose of these items properly, the SMTVD relies on a network of thirteen recycling centers and collection points located throughout the territory.
These facilities are located in Basse-Pointe, Le Morne-Rouge, Saint-Pierre, Schœlcher, Fort-de-France, Saint-Joseph, Le Robert, Le François, Le Vauclin, Saint-Esprit, Le Marin, Sainte-Luce, and Anses-d’Arlet. In Basse-Pointe, service is provided by the Poteau collection point. Other sites include, notably, the recycling centers at Fond Canonville in Saint-Pierre, Case-Navire in Schœlcher, Chateaubœuf in Fort-de-France, Choco-Choisy in Saint-Joseph, and Lestrade in Le Robert.
Waste Diverted to the Right Recycling Channels
Recycling centers allow you to sort different categories of waste as soon as you drop them off. Depending on the facilities available, they can accept wood, bulky items, furniture, metals, paper and cardboard, yard waste, construction debris, glass, textiles, batteries, used motor oil, light bulbs, monitors, and household appliances.
This separation is essential to enable recycling, composting, energy recovery, or the specialized treatment of materials that pose a risk to the environment. The SMTVD notes that sorting at the source makes it possible to recycle more waste and reduce the amount sent to landfills.
The network is also an important tool in the fight against illegal dumping. Illegal dumping degrades the landscape, can clog stormwater drainage systems, and contributes to the pollution of soil, rivers, and the coastline.
Access is generally free for individuals
Most of the recycling centers in the network are free for individuals to use. The Céron recycling center, located in Sainte-Luce, also accepts waste from businesses, but they are charged a fee for drop-offs. Access remains free for individuals.
Since the types of waste accepted and operating hours may vary from one site to another, it is recommended that you check the SMTVD’s information before making the trip. Sorting your waste in your vehicle beforehand also makes it easier to dispose of it in the various bins and reduces the time spent on site.
Through its work in waste treatment, recycling, infrastructure management, and public awareness, the SMTVD plays a central role in organizing waste management in Martinique.
