To mark World Wetlands Day, the Water Authority invites you to explore the biodiversity of Martinique’s wetlands from February 2 to 29, 2020.
Our region is home to 154 wetlands of great diversity: saline or brackish wetlands such as lagoons, mangroves, and ponds…“Flooded or saturated” freshwater wetlands, such as freshwater swamp forests or floodplain forests, as well as freshwater ponds and pools, freshwater aquaculture ponds, and wastewater treatment ponds.
The goal of this event is to raise awareness among the public and visitors about the impact of human activities on these valuable areas. Highlighting their biodiversity and demonstrating the interrelationships between these environments and humans will help raise public awareness. To this end, several events are planned:
On Thursday, February 13, an educational field trip to the Étang des Salines in Sainte Anne for school groups from Saint Esprit, with the theme “Discovering the Mangrove and Preserving My Heritage.”.
On Tuesday, February 18, a public event will be held starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Vauclin covered market on the theme “Discovering My Mangrove,” featuring various speakers. The event will cover knowledge of the environment, mangrove oysters, the regulatory framework of the Conservatoire du Littoral, and recreational activities in this environment.
