Call for Proposals: Restoring Biodiversity in the Overseas Territories

The French Agency for Biodiversity (AFB) is launching a new program across all of France’s overseas territories to support terrestrial, aquatic, and marine biodiversity. Martinique’s Department of Environment, Planning, and Housing is working alongside the AFB to ensure the local implementation of this program, with the aim of supporting and strengthening the stakeholders and networks of stakeholders in Martinique working to promote biodiversity.

From Idea to Action

A significant number of protected areas—both terrestrial and marine—are already helping to improve our understanding of and management of the most sensitive areas in the overseas territories. However, the many stakeholders involved in biodiversity conservation do not always receive technical or financial support commensurate with the challenges they face.

In light of this observation, and as part of its mission, the AFB is issuing a call for projects across all overseas territories to foster the emergence of and provide support for a wide range of initiatives that address local priorities, and to strengthen the stakeholders, networks of stakeholders, and organizations leading these projects.

Project leaders have two months, through April 27, 2018, to submit their applications with a view to formalizing a partnership with the AFB if their project is selected. A second application period is scheduled for July.

To ensure that the call for projects is closely aligned with the specific characteristics and stakeholders of each region, the AFB has entrusted the local coordination of the program to ”local liaisons,“ who, in the French overseas departments (DOM), receive support from the DEALs. These local liaisons consist either of AFB offices in the regions or of partner organizations (national parks or government agencies). In addition, local advisory committees are mobilized to conduct the technical pre-selection phase for projects.

In Martinique, the DEAL serves as the local liaison.

Micro-projects—that is, those receiving grants ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 euros—may also be supported, particularly for managers of natural areas, as a continuation of the Te Me Um program.
