The Effects of Environmental Pollution on the Brain

The conference and discussion organized Monday evening by the Medical Association for the Protection of the Environment and Health (AMSES) on «The Effects of Environmental Pollution on the Brain» was a resounding success.

A session moderated by Professor Barbara DEMENEIX, CNRS Research Director at the Laboratory of General and Comparative Physiology at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. During the event, she presented her research on the impact of endocrine disruptors on our brains.

According to her, “many chemicals in our environment interfere with thyroid hormones, which are among the main regulators of brain development.”.

According to the biologist, hundreds of products in our environment alter the action of thyroid hormones and impair human intelligence. These disruptors are everywhere: in the air, in our food, in our clothing, in our cosmetics… It’s impossible for us to live without them, no matter where we live.

This is a serious situation for adults, but even more so for babies. Many scientists have even observed an increase in neurodevelopmental disorders.

However, according to Barbara DEMENEIX, it is still possible to protect yourself from endocrine disruptors by making a few simple changes to your daily routine:

– Choose a hat and a shirt over sunscreen.

– Use iodized salt

– Choose products from sustainable agriculture instead

– Avoid storing food in plastic containers; choose glass or ceramic instead. Do not drink hot beverages from cups with a plastic lining.

– Wash your new clothes before wearing them.

– Use stainless steel pans instead of nonstick pans.

– Drink tap water or water from glass bottles rather than plastic bottles.

An informative lecture that helped the diverse audience gain a better understanding of the harmful effects of these substances on the brain.
