Discussions are underway regarding the construction of a geothermal power plant at Anses d’Arlet. A potential geothermal reservoir is being studied at Petite Anse. ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency) is organizing a public consultation with the relevant stakeholders.
“Geothermal energy involves harnessing the Earth’s heat to generate electricity, for example, when the potential allows.” And Martinique has significant geothermal potential, due to its volcanic nature, which could enable it to achieve energy self-sufficiency in the near future. Geothermal energy is a stable energy source that allows for constant energy production, which is what makes it so valuable, since we can rely on its consistency. Furthermore, its production does not generate CO2 or related pollution, it is not subject to weather fluctuations, and the resource is free!
For while Martinique is now able to generate 25% of its electricity from renewable sources (primarily solar, waste incineration, and organic matter), there is still much work to be done to achieve energy self-sufficiency using clean energy sources…It’s worth noting that “the energy sector is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Martinique. In fact, the island is heavily dependent on imported oil, both for transportation fuel and for electricity generation.”.
Observations suggest that there is a potential deposit near the Petite Anse hot spring in Dlo Ferré. Two public consultation sessions with residents are planned for this year and at each stage of the resource development project.
