A Solution from Martinique, International Recognition. A group of high school students from Martinique received an award at the Slingshot Challenge, highlighting both Martinique and the importance of protecting water resources. Thanks to this initiative from Martinique, France shone at this international competition.
Award for Excellence
As part of the Slingshot Challenge, organized by National Geographic, the Madin’O association was named the winner of the 2026 Award of Excellence in the «Outstanding Achievement» category. This is a wonderful recognition of the talents found in Martinique and throughout France.
Since 2022, this competition has aimed to recognize young people from all walks of life and from around the world who possess an explorer’s spirit—that is, who have «the skills and knowledge to turn their aspirations into concrete action for the environment,» in the words of the organizers. Among the vast number of applications received from around the world—5,900 young people aged 13 to 18 from 104 countries and 15 winners —the Martinique-based association stood out among projects focused on protecting pollinators in the United States, reforestation in Cameroon, installing solar-powered lamps in Brazil, and deploying AI-powered hydrophones to help protect manatees in Colombia.
Serving the Region's Water Needs
This award recognizes the commitment of Martinique’s youth and, in particular, that of Eden Bonnec, president of the Madin’O association, an organization «founded in Martinique» that «develops solutions to enable safer, more sustainable, and equitable access to high-quality drinking water,» explains Eden Bonnec on his LinkedIn account.
«For several years now, we have been developing low-tech, local, and replicable filtration systems, while also carrying out awareness-raising and educational initiatives on water issues.»
Winning the Award of Excellence is an honor that combines technical expertise with a commitment to the public good, and the race is not over yet, as «public voting is open until July 31, 2026,» explains the association.
This award for a Martinican initiative shows that it is possible to improve water treatment using low-cost solutions that rely on little or simple technology. Is this a first step toward greater recognition in France and around the world? Stay tuned.
