The ONF Martinique teams are hard at work maintaining forest areas. We have them to thank for the upkeep of the forests and other natural areas where hikers love to explore. Visitors, professionals, and other outdoor enthusiasts enjoy these areas without always realizing the importance of maintaining the flora in general and the trees in particular. We spoke with the ONF, which brings these areas to life to make room for people, all while respecting the environment.
Enhancing and Maintaining the Local Area
Their work isn’t always visible on a day-to-day basis, but they are working to maintain natural areas for the benefit of the public. Across the entire territory of Martinique, no fewer than 34 staff members, divided into four teams, are working every day to maintain the natural environment, according to the ONF. «Reforestation, protection, planning, understanding, and enhancement: in Martinique, the ONF teams are fully committed to serving the forests and the region,» state ONF officials.
Maintaining forest areas requires adapting to the climate, the changing seasons, and the vagaries of nature. «On the agenda for the start of this month: landslides and windthrow (fallen trees)—two issues being addressed by the North Caribbean team so that hikers can fully enjoy these trails […],» notes the ONF Martinique in a February 2026 announcement.
Trail Openings
ONF staff are active on multiple fronts, including managing visitor areas, installing and maintaining facilities, maintaining and ensuring the safety of trails, reforestation and tree planting to combat climate change, and finally, combating invasive alien species.
These various tasks, carried out on a regular basis, help mitigate the risk of forest fires, for example, but above all ensure that forest areas can be used safely. Consequently, the successful completion of these tasks and the dedication of the staff have enabled the ONF to announce the opening of two hiking trails on Mount Pelée: the Caldeira Trail and the Chinois Trail. Conversely, other trails remain impassable: the Beauregard Canal, the Morne Jacob Carabin, and the Vauclin Loop, which are still closed.
