Energy costs are skyrocketing around the world, and the Caribbean is no exception. The Martinique Prefecture has just announced fuel prices for the month of June: they remain stable, with no significant increase, which benefits new forms of transportation such as sustainable mobility.
What will fuel prices be in June?
As it does every month, the prefecture announces the price of fuel on the island. After two months of sharp increases, the price of fuel has finally leveled off and will stabilize starting this Monday, the 1ster June.
Unleaded premium gasoline will cost €1.99 per liter, an increase of 3 cents compared to May 2026. As for diesel fuel, it is now €2.09 per liter, the same price as the previous month. The price of a 12.5-kg propane tank is up by €1.96 compared to May 2026.
An Opportunity for Sustainable Transportation
The Prefecture of Martinique reminds the public that financial assistance is available to individuals, notably the «frequent driver» assistance program, as well as sector-specific assistance tailored to various professions: truck drivers, commercial fishermen, farmers, construction workers, and microbusinesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). And new programs may be introduced in the coming months.
However, this sharp increase is difficult to sustain in the long term. The rise in fuel prices since the start of the war in the Middle East presents an opportunity for sustainable transportation options to grow. These options have the advantage of being less expensive and better for the environment and human health. This is evident in the surge in electric vehicle sales in France, estimated at an 81% increase in May 2026 compared to last year. It is therefore worth noting that we are witnessing a shift in transportation modes. Rising fuel prices are driving the growth of sustainable transportation, even though it will likely take a few more years before these options replace internal combustion engine vehicles.
