The future of ecosystems and water quality depends on the presence of mangroves. The Martinique Water Authority is raising awareness about the importance of protecting this unique habitat. Protecting Water and the Coastline
Every week, officials from the Water Office (ODE) share a tip, a fact, or a story to raise awareness about environmental protection. In a social media post in early February, the ODE in Martinique highlighted the importance of preserving mangroves, on which water quality depends.
As in all ecosystems, each element plays a role in the overall balance, and mangroves serve a dual protective function: they protect the water and also protect the coastline, preventing its erosion by the sea. Although this explanation may seem logical, it is up to the ODE teams to reiterate these obvious facts in order to raise awareness and ensure they are applied in daily life.
Save the Mangroves, Protect Martinique
There are many benefits to protecting mangroves, and they are essential to the region. «In Martinique, mangroves play a key role in water quality, biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change. Preserving them means protecting our rivers, our coastline, and our living environment,» states the ODE. But the role played by mangroves goes far beyond water and the coastline.
A natural filter, a barrier against erosion, a refuge for crustaceans, birds, and fish, and, finally, a regulator of climate change: the benefits of protecting mangroves are many and varied. Less valued than marine areas and coral reefs, mangroves are sometimes perceived as «a dirty, smelly place—or simply a spot where people go to catch crabs at Easter,» explain ODE officials, who conclude: «In Martinique, the coastline is particularly fragile. Protecting mangroves means preserving water resources, biodiversity, and our living environment.» There are, therefore, every reason to protect mangroves and preserve them for future generations.
