Because they consume too much energy, halogen light bulbs will no longer be sold as of September 1, 2018. However, remaining stock in stores may still be sold. Consumers are encouraged to switch to LED bulbs («light-emitting diode») and compact fluorescent bulbs (or energy-efficient bulbs).
The lifespan of LED bulbs is generally estimated at 15,000 hours, but it can be as long as 40,000 hours, according to the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), compared to 2,000 hours for halogen bulbs and 8,000 hours for compact fluorescent bulbs. ADEME notes that these bulbs pay for themselves in less than a year, with energy efficiency that is one-third higher than that of compact fluorescent bulbs.
