Corsica Sole, a specialist in solar energy for island regions, is expanding into Martinique

This new renewable energy developer offers a win-win solution for farmers in Martinique and is looking for degraded land to redevelop it into solar power plants….

According to the 2030 energy self-sufficiency goals for the overseas territories (COP 21) and the latest scenario from the Renewable Energy Association, Martinique is the overseas territory with the greatest potential for developing photovoltaic power plants. Its abundant sunshine, combined with regular rainfall that cleans the solar panels, provides ideal conditions for photovoltaic energy production. And this is despite the small size of the territory, since covering less than 1% of Martinique’s land area would be sufficient to meet 100% of the island’s electricity needs.

Corsica Sole, Corsica’s leading independent energy producer, has been working since last year to help achieve energy self-sufficiency in all areas not connected to the national power grid (ZNI), particularly in Martinique.

Drawing on its experience in Corsica and Réunion, Corsica Sole offers our regions two ways to accelerate the energy transition. First, Corsica Sole offers farmers the opportunity to build agricultural sheds on their land that meet earthquake- and hurricane-resistant standards, topped with a photovoltaic roof. The farmer benefits from the shed free of charge for life, primarily to shelter their animals, crops, or machinery. In exchange, Corsica Sole operates the photovoltaic roof by feeding its electricity directly into the grid and therefore covers all project costs (from legal arrangements to construction, as well as grid connection).

Corsica Sole’s second proposal involves leasing degraded or contaminated land (such as landfills, quarries, and perhaps even areas contaminated with chlordecone) or the rooftops of existing buildings to install and operate photovoltaic power plants there.

Like all renewable energy, solar energy is by definition intermittent because it follows the sun’s path. To achieve energy self-sufficiency, it is therefore necessary to also install energy storage devices (batteries), which allow energy to be stored during the day and discharged after sunset, when demand is highest. Corsica Sole is a pioneer in this field, having operated a solar power plant with batteries for over two years, which has enabled it to develop an innovative system for regulating and optimizing the storage and discharge of solar energy: a major innovation that should enable solar power to take the lead in clean electricity production in our regions.
