Nighttime Stroll
The Matinik Vélo association is organizing a nighttime bike ride on June 20, starting in Schœlcher and ending in Fort-de-France. The ride is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., so please arrive by 5:15 p.m. The group is expected to arrive in Fort-de-France at 6:15 p.m., with a return to Schœlcher scheduled for 8:00 p.m. A snack break is planned for 7:30 p.m.; everyone is welcome to bring whatever they’d like to enjoy and share.
This bike ride has been organized for everyone, including children; however, the routes vary in difficulty. «Families with children, as well as those who haven’t cycled recently, are encouraged to join us in Fort-de-France for the intermediate section of the ride—a 10-kilometer route that’s mostly flat,» explain the organizers. This is a free event open to everyone.
Safety and Sustainable Development: Key Issues in Non-Motorized Transportation
Organizing a bike ride in Martinique is a way for the Matinik Vélo association to highlight the importance of using sustainable transportation as part of an ecological approach to protecting the environment. «[…] »Taking part in one of our activities means getting involved in civic action that helps advance the association’s goals and raise public awareness of the need to cycle more in this region for the sake of our collective health and sustainable development,” the association emphasizes.
It’s also about raising awareness of safety issues; the organizers ask that participants follow all traffic laws and wear equipment that allows them to ride safely on the road, while being mindful of other road users. Finally, lighting is absolutely essential. «The more our bikes are lit up, the safer we are. Don’t hesitate to add battery-powered string lights, etc.»
